History & Philosophy 5: Color-Coding

We color-code the paragraph and the essay. The kinesthetic approach to learning is well documented and helps students to master content. We asked one seventh-grade student why he liked using the colored pens. He said, “They help me remember what kind of thoughts I need to include and where to put them.”
We chose our four colors because they were the least expensive ballpoint pens available at office supply stores. Colored pencils work as well but are more expensive and need sharpening often; however, many elementary teachers prefer them. We wanted four separate pens that students could pick up and use because we saw a greater engraving of the concepts on the brain when they did this.
Students will wean themselves from the colored pens when they are ready; we do not recommend requiring them ad nauseum. Some students leave the colored pens behind on the second or third day of class; others want to use them throughout high school. One senior said,” “They help me think thoughts.” We encourage students to use whatever tools will help them think clearly. Some teachers like the final drafts color-coded, but we recommend that final drafts for high school students be typed or written in black/blue ink.

One of the cornerstones of the program’s success is the gradual release of responsibility methodology:

"You do it."
We use this strategy in our workshops with our teachers. And we hope that you will follow this methodology with your students, as well.
